Constructions with the verb “chegar”

Abstract

In its most prototypical use, "chegar" (to arrive) is characterized semantically by expressing physical movement and syntactically as monoargumental accompanied by an adverbial phrase, as in: "Madonna chega ao Brasil para show histórico no Rio de Janeiro" (Correio Braziliense, 29/04/2024). However, in everyday interactions, different instantiations can be observed: "ele é tão lindo que chega a doer" (Rede X, 10/04/2024). Taking this into account, this study investigates uses of constructions with the verb "chegar" associated with another verb and seeks to weave possible interrelations. To this end, the theoretical assumptions of Usage-Based Functional Linguistics are adopted. The grammar of the language is conceived as a complex adaptive system emerging from discursive practices (Hopper, 1987), with the construction, as a pairing of form and meaning, taken as its basic unit (Croft, 2001; Goldberg, 2006; Hilpert, 2014; Traugott and Trousdale, 2021 [2016]). The research corpus is composed of 131 constructs collected from the social network X (Twitter) and the Projeto Norma Urbana Culta - NURC/Recife. The analysis of the occurrences observed the influence of semantic-cognitive and pragmatic factors in the architecture of the constructions. The results point to possible interrelations between constructions with "chegar" motivated by the conceptual proximity of the categories of movement, resultativity and emphasis.
