About the Journal

Presentation

The Revista Guará is an open access scientific journal linked to the Extension Office (Pró-Reitoria de Extensão) of the Federal University of Espírito Santo (Ufes), dedicated to the continuous publication of scientific manuscripts related to university extension.

The journal welcomes different types of academic production – including original articles, review articles, experience reports, interviews, and editorials – that critically examine, analyze, and systematize extension practices in dialogue with research and teaching. By promoting the qualified circulation of such contributions, Guará seeks to strengthen extension as a structuring dimension of the contemporary university, contributing to the articulation between scientific knowledge and social demands.

All published content is made immediately available in open access, with no submission, evaluation, or publication fees, ensuring broad dissemination and democratization of knowledge.

Mission and Scope

The Revista Guará aims to promote the qualified dissemination of knowledge produced within the field of university extension, encouraging critical reflections, interdisciplinary approaches, and innovative practices committed to social, cultural, scientific, and technological development.

The journal publishes works that address extension in its multiple dimensions – epistemological, methodological, political, and territorial – encompassing different fields of knowledge and fostering dialogue between university and society. The journal is particularly interested in studies that:

  • critically analyze extension practices;
  • systematize intervention experiences in diverse social contexts;
  • articulate extension, research, and teaching;
  • contribute to the formulation, evaluation, or implementation of public policies;
  • explore interdisciplinary approaches and participatory methodologies.

The journal has an interdisciplinary character and encourages submissions from national and international authors, contributing to the consolidation of extension as a field of knowledge production and social transformation.

Publication Frequency

The Revista Guará adopts a continuous publication model, in which approved manuscripts are published immediately after the completion of the editorial process.

This model ensures greater agility in scientific communication, reducing the time between submission and publication, and increasing the reach and impact of extension-related outputs.

Open Access Policy

The Revista Guará adopts an immediate open access policy, making all its content freely available to the public without restrictions or fees for either authors or readers.

This policy is aligned with the principles of Open Science and the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI), promoting the democratization of scientific knowledge, increasing the visibility of academic production, and strengthening research and extension networks at national and international levels.

Journal History

Founded in 2012, the Revista Guará was created with the aim of disseminating and valuing university extension actions developed within higher education institutions.

Throughout its trajectory, the journal has undergone a continuous process of editorial improvement, including the expansion and diversification of its editorial board, with the incorporation of external researchers, and the progressive adoption of practices aligned with national and international standards of scientific publishing.

After a temporary interruption between 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the journal resumed its activities in 2022, consolidating its editorial restructuring.

In the 2021–2024 CAPES Qualis evaluation cycle, the Revista Guará achieved the highest classification (A1) across all evaluation areas, marking a significant milestone that reflects its academic relevance and editorial quality.

Archiving and Digital Preservation Policy

Revista Guará adopts digital preservation policies to ensure permanent and long-term access to its scientific content.

The journal is integrated into the Cariniana Network, coordinated by the Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology (Ibict), a national initiative for digital preservation based on international standards. The Cariniana Network represents one of the main infrastructures for the preservation of scientific journals in Brazil, focused on safeguarding open access digital content.

The technical architecture of the network is based on the LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) system, developed by Stanford University, which operates through a distributed preservation model. This system creates multiple copies of content across participating institutions, ensuring its integrity, authenticity, and availability even in cases of local failure or interruption of editorial services.

Through this infrastructure, Revista Guará ensures that its content remains accessible, preserved, and recoverable over time, in accordance with international best practices for digital preservation of scholarly journals.

Institutional Support

The Revista Guará is supported by the Extension Office (Pró-Reitoria de Extensão) of the Federal University of Espírito Santo (Ufes), which provides institutional support for the development and consolidation of the journal.
